Bio
The Nightwatchman has many powerful enemies. Some of them are war criminals. But he also has powerful friends. Some of them are coyotes.
Tom Morello's debut solo album as The Nightwatchman, One Man Revolution, produced by Brendan O'Brien, features him on acoustic guitar and lead vocals on thirteen songs, all written by Morello. The Nightwatchman's Hotel Cafe residency in LA in 2007 and 2008 has featured many of his musical cohorts and social justice partners, including Ben Harper, Serj Tankian, Perry Farrell, Shooter Jennings, Bettencourt, Sen-Dog from Cypress Hill, Jill Sobule, Boots Riley of The Coup, Alexi Murdoch, Jon Foreman from Switchfoot and others.
A Brief History of Tom:
Tom Morello's parents were Ngethe Njorokge, a Kenyan revolutionary who was later the first Kenyan delegate to the United Nations, and Mary Morello, a history and social studies teacher from Illinois who became a figurehead in the 1980s battle over music censorship after her retirement from teaching when she founded anti-censorship organization Parents for Rock and Rap. His parents divorced when Tom was one. Notably, Morello's great uncle, Jomo Kenyatta, was the first president of Kenya.
Harlem-born and Libertyville, IL-bred, Morello graduated with honors from Harvard University in Political Science. His previous bands, Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, have collectively sold 30 million albums and have won two Grammys; Audioslave was the first U.S. band to play Cuba. In 2007, Morello released his first solo album, the hard-left acoustic One Man Revolution, under the name The Nightwatchman. Morello recently contributed a track to Body Of War: Songs That Inspired An Iraq War Veteran, a 2-CD benefit collection for Justice Tour partner Iraq Veterans Against the War.
Morello was named one of Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitar Players," at #26. He has produced artists as diverse as Puff Daddy, Indigo Girls, Joe Strummer, KRS-1, Wu Tang Clan, Crystal Method and Anti-Flag, and has scored such films as Collateral, Charlie's Angels, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and XXX: State of the Union. Morello hosts the weekly radio show Axis of Justice Radio Network on KPFK Los Angeles and various syndicated stations. He was the recipient of the 2006 Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award.
